If you think that humidity causes impact only on the human body resulting in more or less sweating then you’re living in a fool’s paradise. Because, humidity can have an effect on wood, leather and on many more things that you can’t even imagine.

Finding this matter of humidity highly crucial, we did a lot of study regarding its impact on leather as leather is a most flexible material. In the study, we identified the different impacts of humidity on leather and reached an effective solution to protect leather.

Now, we will be sharing our findings with you for the protection of your expensive and luxurious leather furniture. Here we go!

Leather Furniture and Humidity

  • Changes tensile strength

In the study, it’s found that an environment where the level of humidity is reduced impacts the ultimate tensile strength of leather negatively. For example, at a relative humidity, which is near 0, vegetable-tanned leather’s tensile strength is 4,630 lbs. / square inch, while the tensile strength becomes 5,290 lbs./sq. inch at 83.8 RH. Difference in the strength is 12.5%.

Again, chrome-tanned leather tensile strength is found to be 3,170 lbs./sq. inch at 0 RH while it turns to 5,420 lbs./sq. inch at 97.1 RH.

In short, with the increasing level of humidity, the level of tensile strength increases noticeably, this is a crucial fact to decide the longevity of leather.

  • Helps grow mold and bacteria

From the previous section, you have come to learn that an increment in the level of humidity increases tensile strength. But, you will be amazed now learning that the more the humidity is, the more the probability of bacteria and mold growing. The more and faster these two grow, the faster and more the leather starts rotting.

  • Promotes shrinking

Just like the growth of mold and bacteria in touch of humidity, shrinkage also develops quickly with the increment of humidity. The more the leather shrinks, the more it loses quality.

  • Causes crack

It is also found when the humidity level is exceptionally low, your leather will dry out maximumly. And eventually, it will be cracked.

Probable solutions

  • Don’t leave the furniture in an open area or don’t keep the doors and windows always open where there is leather furniture.
  • Regularly monitor the humidity level of your room using a humidifier. Whenever you find the level to be less than 30% or more than 40%, release additional moisture vapor using the humidifier.

Final words

In the end, it can be stated that neither too much nor too low humidity level is going to be suitable for your leather furniture. So, what you need to do is - making the best use of a humidifier to monitor the humidity level regularly and adjust the level accordingly.
